Easy Ice Cream in a bag

The summer is here which means the 4th of July is already next week! Our summers always consist of two things, swimming and ice cream. We love to cool off by eating some type of frozen treat. So today my oldest and I decided to experiment making our own homemade ice cream! With just a couple of staple ingredients you can also make your own. We started by gathering all of our ingredients and for this recipe you’ll need the following.

Equipment you’ll need

• one gallon sized zip lock bag

• one quart sized zip lock bag

optional oven mitts or towel to avoid hands from getting too cold.

Ingredients

• 1 cup milk or heavy cream

• 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar

• ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

• 4 cups of ice or as needed

• ¼ cup kosher salt

• 1 tablespoon cocoa powder optional

Fill your first bag

In the gallon sized bag add your salt and ice, then set aside to fill your next bag. In the quart sized bag add your milk or cream, vanilla extract, cocoa powder and sugar. Be sure to close well without air. Give it a little shake to ensure that all ingredients are semi blended.

Place your small bag inside the large bag

Here is where the fun part begins and the liquid will begin transforming into ice cream.

Close the gallon sized bag and begin to shake, allowing the ice to freeze the liquid. My ice began melting so I poured out the water and added more ice. I added two more cups of ice, making it 6 total. We shook for a total of 10 minutes and then voila we had homemade ice cream!

Toppings

Feel free to get creative with the toppings, we added chocolate chips for a double chocolate ice cream.

• strawberries

• fudge

• bananas

• whipped cream

• sprinkles

Vegan/ Dairy free option

Use canned coconut cream in place of the milk/heavy whipping cream.

If you give this a try be sure to tag me @frecklesandcocoa I’d love to see your delicious homemade ice cream.
